July 12th – Ficus microcarpa ‘Melon Seed’ – Instructor TBD

This workshop will go on sale at the June 21st Club meeting. The class will be held at the July 12th meeting in room 101 at 8:30am. The cost is $175.00. These are large Ficus trees about 22 inches tall with 2-inch trunks. The class will focus on selecting the front of the tree, the tree will be cut back and the branches wired.

February 8, 2026 and June 21, 2026 Intermediate Workshop
with Mark Edgar, Catlin Elms (small leaf)
Room 101 8:30am-10:15am, Cost $225, 6 Students. SOLD OUT
These trees are fairly tall and elegant and will make some very nice informal upright bonsai. At this workshop you will repot the trees into clay grow pots, prune to primary branches and do some wiring.

Afternoon session: 1:00pm-4:00pm, Cost $80, 8 Students. SOLD OUT
Kusamono refers to a Japanese botanical art that developed along side bonsai. Kusamono are potted arrangements of wild grasses and flowering plants in unique pots or trays, selected to suggest a season place. Young Choe, www.kusamonochoe.com, will guide participants through the basics of creating Kusamono. Various plants, soils and slate slabs will be provided.

- In addition your tools, participants are asked to bring small, interesting pots to use for their Kusamono arrangements.
- Also, feel free to bring additional plants to use and/or to share with other students.
- If you have moss, please bring it too. The finishing touch to Kusamono plantings is covering any exposed soil with moss.

This will be a series of 3 sessions with the option of 2 more sessions in 2027. Each participant is expected to compete the first three sessions. The sessions will consist of the following:
January 11, 2026: Session 1 - Repot the tree, select the front and make some basic branch decisions
June 21, 2026: Review the tree, possibly cut candles or pull needles as necessary.
November 9, 2026: Review the tree, situationally pull needles, thin, pine and wire.
Limit 6 attendees. This workshop went on sale at the November 2025 Club Meeting. The cost for the first three 2026 sessions is $275. At the end of 2026, there will be an option for 2 more sessions in 2027 to continue working on your tree. If you chose to move forward with this in 2027, the cost will be an additional $50 for those 2 sessions.

Workshops are sold two months in advance at the SDBC meetings. Any open seats in the workshop after the club meeting will then be sold here on the club website. Your name is added to the list after payment is received.
