Bonsai literally means "plant in a pot". Over time the design and selection of the pot itself has come to be part of the art of bonsai. Tradition offers a prescription for the type of pot that is used to display a particular species of tree, but it is still the responsibility of the bonsai artist to select the pot that perfectly complements a particular tree or plant.
