When bonsai are exhibited, they are often shown with accent plants. An accent plant is chosen to complement the tree often in terms of color, texture and form. The plant must complement the bonsai without detracting from the tree itself. It should catch the attention of the viewer and lead the eye back to the tree. Selecting and potting the perfect accent plant is an art form in itself.
