Ryan Haines
I have been working with bonsai for 10 years and I have been an artist my entire life. Painting and illustration have always been second nature for me and I also hold a degree in design. This is relevant because my experience as an artist makes the conceptual elements involved in converting raw material to a small scale tree very familiar to me. Continuous cultivation of art is my normal way of life. After working with bonsai on my own for a few years I started learning with Cindy Reed and continued to do so for 2 years and I also spent a good amount of time informally learning with Tim Hua for the better part of a year. Mostly just talking about bonsai, or his trees and what his plans for them were, and most importantly watching him work. I gained a lot of confidence when I was spending time with Tim, I definitely wouldn’t be capable of caring for and developing all the trees I have now without him.
Speaking of those trees I’m currently cultivating 42 trees out of a one bedroom apartment in hillcrest. 20 ficus, 2 trident elm, 2 boxwood, 6 juniper, 5 olive, 1 pine, 4 elm, 2 desert rose. I’ve created an environment with enough light on my East facing covered patio for my trees to thrive continually over the past 5 years I’ve lived here. In addition I also have an indoor environment for 16 trees (12 ficus, 4 elm). It is located in my kitchen (the only place I have a south facing window) and through additional lighting, a humidifier, and regular consistent misting I’ve been able to maintain an ecosystem that the ficus almost prefer to being outside. I’d have to thank Jerry Meislik for the indoor growing expertise and while I didn’t learn from him directly the man and his materials have been a major influence on me. Also in case you were wondering, yes I still have a functional kitchen. One last note is that I participated in the club exhibition last fall (my first exhibition) where I displayed 5 trees. Thank you sincerely for your time and consideration, I hope my my experience level can adequately meet your standards. If there are further questions or anything I can do please feel free to reach out at any point.
