Yuha Desert Suiseki Trip

Our next field trip is just around the corner. We will be looking for suiseki, or viewing stones, in the Yuha Desert Basin, just east of Ocotillo, off of I-8. The date for the trip is Saturday, March 22nd. Please meet at 8:00AM at the Starbucks off I-15 at the Aero Drive Exit (3675 Murphy Canyon Rd, San Diego, see map below). We will stop at the "last chance restrooms" at the Buckman Springs Rest Area, and arrive at the desert around 10:00AM.
We will be car-pooling to the desert. There is no club fee for the trip, but we will all be chipping in for gasoline for those who drive.
The Bureau of Land Management allows us to take 25lbs plus one specimen per day. We are not allowed to remove any Historical or Native American artifacts. Depending on where we travel, we may find petrified wood and/or oyster shells. We will be staying on paved roads, no 4-wheeling this trip.
You will NEED to bring a lunch, water, hat, sun glasses, sunscreen, hiking shoes, bucket, gloves and anything else you may want for a few hours of rock collecting. A long handled garden cultivator was suggested for turning over possible stone choices as opposed to stooping down with a hand trowel to turn over a stone.
Since we can’t predict the weather this far in advance, be prepared for extreme heat or cold winds. Please note, we are not going into a park, this is wide open desert with no facilities.
We hope you will join us for an interesting adventure.
