Past MeetingSunday, September 9th
Room 104, Casa del Prado, Balboa Park (room 104 only, SD Iris Society is having a sale in 101) Our presenter will be Peter Macasieb. Peter began studying bonsai by reading John Nakas' book until he met Harry Hirao in 2004. Subsequently his relationship with Harry Hirao his teacher began when he invited Peter to help him with his bonsai demonstration. Peter has also studied with Tak Shimazu and Boon Manakitivipart and they introduced him to grafting and the art of shohin bonsai. His shohin passion comes from his energy in bringing more of himself into what he does best. Having a good eye, dedication, hard work and always pushing the limits. Peter won Best of show in Santa Anita and the John Naka award with his shohin display at Descanso Bonsai Society. At this point in his bonsai career, he teaches, does demos at various clubs and shohin study groups, convention workshops and continues to study more as he progresses. Peter is a member of California Bonsai Society, Kofu Kai Bonsai, Descanso Bonsai Society, Santa Anita Bonsai Society, and Orange County Bonsai Society. Peter will be working on a 10-year-old itoigawa juniper that he has grown from a cutting. This tree was grown for 2 years then aluminum wire and major twisting was applied to the base to achieve that yamadori look of a mature tree. Now at about 10 years old the tree has a trunk that is over 2 inches thick with a height of 14 inches. This tree will be styled as a shohin that is less than 8 inches in height. You won’t want to miss this demo. In addition to his demo, Peter will hold two bring your own tree workshops before and after our meeting. These workshops are full however silent observers are welcome. |
