Room 101, Casa del Prado, Balboa Park Mel Ikeda is a master of raft style bonsai. Anyone lucky enough to have seen him create a raft bonsai at the 2016 Winter Silhouettes styling competition will tell you he is a real crowd pleaser. Raft style is another method for creating a forest bonsai or multi-trunk looking bonsai, except it is created from a single tree. The tree is trimmed so that the best branches are pretty much on one side of the tree and the root ball is trimmed on the down facing side. This style is challenging but a lot of fun. All of this will be expertly demonstrated by Mr. Ikeda. For more detail on the process of creating raft-style bonsai, check out the July 2015 Dai Ichi Bonsai Kai newsletter recapping a demo Mel did. |
