The annual San Diego Bonsai Club May meeting, picnic, and silent auction will be held at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park in a New Location – The Hunte Nairobi Pavilion on May 4, 2025. The Park opens at 9 a.m. Guests can enter the Hunte Nairobi Pavilion at that time. Only guests who have registered in advance (April 13th cut off) will be able to enter the Safari Park for free. Guests are free to enjoy the day at the Safari Park before and after the meeting.
Jonas Dupuich will be joining us in May as we visit the Bonsai Pavilion. A group tour will head up to the Bonsai Pavilion after lunch. Jonas will be discussing developmental steps for some of the material in the collection. The purpose of this is so members can see in person refined bonsai and understand where they are in their development. Also, what needs to be done to get them to be show level trees and how to display the. This will be a very informative session on Jonas' critique of the bonsai.
Picnic lunch: Members are asked to bring their own picnic lunches, or to purchase food at the Safari Park to bring to the Hunte Nairobi Pavilion – no food will be provided or for sale inside the pavilion. Water will be provided. You may bring your own other beverages but remember - No glass containers are allowed in the Safari Park.
Parking: When you reach the Parking kiosk, tell the employee that you are attending the San Diego Bonsai Club Picnic. Parking should be free.
Admission: Club member guests who have registered in advance should go to the special event table at the main front entrance. Provide your name at the table for your picnic admission ticket. From the entrance, follow directions provided at the park to reach the Hunte Nairobi Pavilion close to the entrance and just behind the carousel.
Silent Auction: Please bring bonsai and related items to donate to our silent auction fundraiser for the Club Bonsai Pavilion and be ready to bid on donated bonsai and related accessories. This is a fun and exciting event!
The Hunte Pavilion is located a short walk from the entrance, by the carousel.
The Bonsai Pavilion will be closed to the public until about 1:00pm. This will be a good opportunity to see the bonsai without the crowds. The Pavilion can be visited anytime during the picnic. Just go through the iron gate (even though it will say "closed").
